Summer Workshops in Ann Arbor

Overview

Participants in the Ann Arbor workshops are introduced to the resources of SSDAN in "hands on" training sessions, and also work with SSDAN staff to begin developing classroom exercises specific to their own courses. Workshop time is divided between seminar discussions, practice exploring the SSDAN materials, and working with staff to develop individual exercises. The faculty includes sociologist-demographers William Frey and Barbara Anderson of the University of Michigan, economist Tony Catanese of DePauw University, and other selected visitors. Participants will have access to the well-appointed computer facilities at the University of Michigan's Population Studies Center, where all workshop activities will take place.

Applications Invited

Instructors from all of the social science disciplines who teach undergraduate courses in four-year colleges, two-year colleges, or universities, both public and private, are invited to apply. Primary consideration will be given to those participants who are willing to develop class exercises from the SSDAN materials and use them in their classes during the year subsequent to the workshop.

Expenses

Participants selected for the workshop will be provided accommodation in University of Michigan dormitory housing, meals and compensation for expenses while in Ann Arbor. However, consistent with NSF guidelines, the cost of travel to and from Ann Arbor must be borne by the individual's home institution, or the individual participant. (Note: Limited travel funds are available to facilitate the participation of specially targeted groups, or faculty from institutions which do not normally support any part of the participation in such workshops).

Application Process

The application deadline for summer 2002 workshops was January 15. This year the application process was administered by the American Sociological Association (see www.asanet.org for more information).
