On October 12th, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross asked Congress for a $3.3 billion increase in funding for the 2020 census. As predicted expenditures for the census increase, the consequences of having an inaccurate census looms. In a time where Americans are said to be less likely than ever before to self-report their existence to the federal government, the 2020 census is in danger of inaccuracy due to insufficient funding. This inaccuracy would impact not only the distribution of congressional seats for the next decade, but also affect the shape of districts, allocation of federal funding, and widely used federal reports of demographic data.
