At this time, SSDAN is accepting applications from current University of Michigan students for the following positions: Research Assistant, Project Coordinator, and Programmer. Preference will be given to students with junior year or earlier standing for Programmer and Research Assistant candidates. Project Coordinator candidates are usually graduate students.
Students whose skills span across the various positions (e.g, research,
web-design, programming, and/or graphic design) are highly encouraged to
apply.
RESEARCH AND WRITING
Assistant in Research / Research Assistant II
Research assistant will be exposed to hands-on experience
in social science research and in communicating research results to
educators and policymakers through a variety of media. Potential to write
and publish significant original works. Research using U.S. Census data to
study demographic and social change in America. Depending on skills,
interests, and background of research assistant, position will include
writing social science curricular and tutorial materials, researching and
writing about demographic issues, and creating tables in Excel.
Qualifications: strong interest in the social sciences, good writing
skills, experience using Excel. Applicants with experience using
GIS-mapping software are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference will be
given to students in junior or earlier standing, as well as to students
whose skills overlap with other needs (e.g. web-design, programming,

TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN
Programmer I Programmer will have opportunities to work on independent projects and develop resources of their own design. Programmer will hold lead role in working with team of designers and writers to maintain and update current websites. Responsibilities include writing and revising CGI scripts, designing and updating web databases, and administering web server. Existing scripts include data set search engines and dynamic graphing routines to communicate demographic research results to educators and policymakers. Qualifications: Experience with network/server administration, Perl, UNIX, Apache, MySQL, and HTML. Experience with Visual Basic, Flash, Scheme, or GIS is a plus. Web Designer Web designer will work on team with programmers and writers to build and maitain nationally visible web sites.
Desiner will help design site look-and-feel, prepare web-ready graphics, define site architecture, and write HTML. Existing sites,
including www.CensusScope.org and www.frey-demographer.org, support social science curriculum development projects, provide access to
publications, and provide easy-to-use Census data access. Basic qualifications: HTML, Photoshop, Illustrator, UNIX. Desired
qualifications: style sheets (CSS), Flash, print design experience, Excel, ArcView. Hours: 8-15 hours/week, flexible.
OFFICE
Office Assistant / Program Assistant Update databases, prepare mailings, and plan workshops for social science research and curricular project. Good
time-management, organizational, and communication skills are essential. Experience with Macs and PCs, Word, Access, and FileMaker is
desired. Experience with Excel or HTML is a plus. Hours: 8-15 hours/week, flexible.
