SSDAN provides a number of ways to utilize Census data
in the classroom:
Datasets
With SSDAN datasets, current Census information can be accessed and examined using data analysis programs from ZetaData, Inc. With these programs, StudentCHIP and WebCHIP, students are able to manipulate data to examine trends and
perform in-depth analysis of demographic and social characteristics found in the U.S. population. William H. Frey has designed a workbook, Investingating Change in American Society, to accompany these datasets and provide instructors with direct ways
to tie data analysis to their classroom.
To search for datasets by subject, geography, or data
source, visit the Dataset Query Engine.
With this tool, appropriate datasets are collected to be downloaded for
use in StudentCHIP or opened directly in WebCHIP.

Exercise Modules Once you have found datasets that fit your classroom needs, design an exercise
module that prompts students to manipulate the data in various ways and draw conclusions from the resulting charts and graphs.
The SSDAN website offers access to a number of exercise modules designed by faculty at
schools across the country and tested in their
classrooms. Feel free to utilize any of these modules in classroom data analysis or use them as examples in the creation of your own modules.
Feedback is always appreciated! If you find an SSDAN data set or module particularly
useful, would like to share your own modules with
other faculty, or have any suggestion, please email us at ssdan-staff@umich.edu or view
comments from other
SSDAN participants.
We encourage you to contact us with any questions, comments, or feedback, by sending
an e-mail
to: William Frey, SSDAN Director: bill.frey@usa.net or to ssdan-staff@umich.edu
