% Down or % Across

When selecting your variables, consider how you wish to view the results of your cross tabulation. View these examples to better understan how your choice of % Down and % Across creates different results.

If you perform a percent down crosstab with immigration status as your row variable and race/ethnicity as your column variable, you'll be able to answer questions like "What percent of the Asian population is foreign-born?" However, if you perform this same crosstab but use percent across, you'll be able to investigate entirely new questions, such as, "What percent of those who are foreign-born are Asian?"
