COURSE OBJECTIVES:

This course provides an introduction to some of the major current trends in the American and World Population structures. Participants will become familiar with the major schools of thought and major concepts in population and demography studies. Students will research population and demographic issues using database computer programs and Internet resources.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Attendance and participation in class. Students may be excused from class for good reason with permission of the instructor. Two points will be deducted from the course grade for each unexcused absence after the third. Students who are late for class should check to see that their attendance is recorded.

2. Tests: Four examinations will be given as indicated on the class schedule below. Make-up exams will be given only for excused absences. Exams will cover both assigned readings and classroom lecture/discussion materials. It is the student's responsibility to study the assigned readings. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT EXPECT THAT THE CONTENT OF THE READINGS WILL BE ENTIRELY COVERED IN CLASS LECTURES.

3. Worksheets containing computer assignments will be handed out in class. AU worksheets must be completed by the time of each exam, unless extensions are given by the Instructors prior to the due dates. All worksheets will be checked for completion, but not all will be graded. Worksheets grade will be the average of the graded worksheets - MINUS points for incomplete, inadequate, or missing worksheets.

GRADES:

Grades will be calculated as follows:

Examination 50%
Worksheets 50%

90-100% = A, 80-90% = B, 70-80% = C, 60-70% = D, 60% = F
