On December 12th, the Department of Justice wrote a letter to the Census Bureau asking the Bureau to put a question of citizenship status for every member of a household on the 2020 census form, on the premise of  better enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Sparking controversy, this letter has raised concerns about census accuracy, lower voter turnouts, especially in immigrant communities, as well as how this information may be used. This request is currently under review, and is scheduled to come before Congress before March 31st, 2018.
