The Social Science Data Analysis Network (SSDAN) is a university-based organization that creates
demographic media, such as user guides, web sites, and hands-on classroom computer materials that make U.S. census data
accessible to policymakers, educators, the media, and informed citizens. SSDAN is directed by demographer William H.
Frey and utilizes facilities at the Population Studies Center, University of Michigan. SSDAN activities have been
supported by the National Science Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education Fund for
the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
(NICHD), the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Public Data Queries, Inc., and the U.S. Census Bureau.
Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI)
The Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement project will build upon the current success of SSDAN (http://www.ssdan.net) and the ICPSR (http://www.icpsr.umich.edu) to transform teaching in the social science by infusing quantitative literacy through the curriculum and providing undergraduates active experience with the most advanced social science data. This project will help to reduce the “quantitative reasoning gap” between what students learn in early courses and the important of empirical research in the social sciences.
Quantitative Social Science Digital Library (QSSDL)
QSSDL will provide a single online source making it easy for instructors to find user-friendly, data-driven instructional materials in the social science. QSSDL will feature a multi-faceted online interface that includes access to data, repackaged data, analytical and graphing tools as well as social-networking functions for instructors to share teaching experiences and materials. The aim is to promote quantitative literacy, and reduce the “quantitative literacy gap” found in the undergraduate social science population by helping instructors to find high quality teaching materials that include data for student exercises and research.
American Community Survey CensusScope "Hot Reports"
Using the DataFerrett Hot Reports technology, SSDAN will utilize new American Community Survey (ACS) data to create a dynamic page highlighting social and demographic trends for CensusScope. These pages will display ACS data in visual, interactive formats to engage users with new Census Bureau data.
